Grade Calculator

Work out your current grade in a class from your syllabus weights (homework, quizzes, tests and so on), see the letter grade, and find what you need on the work that hasn't been graded yet.

Your average in this category, e.g. homework or quizzes. Over 100 is fine for extra credit.

From your syllabus. Set the weight to 0 to skip a row.

Used when your weights add up to less than 100%.

  • Your weights add up to 70%, so this is your grade on the work graded so far, with the weights normalized. The other 30% of the class isn't graded yet.
  • Letter grades use a common US scale; your school or teacher may use different cutoffs or round (e.g. 89.5 up to 90).

How a weighted grade works

Most syllabuses split the grade into categories, each worth a percentage: say homework 20%, quizzes 15%, the midterm 25%, a project 10% and the final 30%. Your grade is not the average of all your scores; each category's average counts in proportion to its weight. A bad quiz in a 15% category hurts much less than the same score on a 25% midterm.

To calculate it, multiply each category average by its weight, add the results, and divide by the total of the weights. If every category has been graded, the weights total 100% and the division changes nothing.

When the weights don't add up to 100%

Partway through a term, some categories have no grades yet. Online gradebooks such as Blackboard handle this by dividing by only the weights that have grades, so your current grade reflects the work done so far. This calculator does the same: enter only the categories you have scores for, and it normalizes the weights and tells you so.

It also shows how many percentage points you've already banked and what average you need on the ungraded remainder to reach the grade you want. If that number is over 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit; if it's 0% or less, you've already locked it in.

If your weights add up to more than 100%, something is usually mistyped. The calculator still divides by the total so the answer stays on a 0-100 scale, but check the syllabus.

Getting your category averages right

Within a category, teachers average in one of two ways. Some average the percentages (each quiz counts equally); others add up points (a 50-point quiz counts more than a 10-point one). Your syllabus or gradebook usually says which. Dropped lowest scores, late penalties and extra credit also change the category average, so use the average your gradebook shows when you have it.

The weighted grade formula

Current grade = Σ (score × weight) ÷ Σ weightNeeded on remaining work = (target − Σ (score × weight) ÷ 100) ÷ (remaining weight ÷ 100)
  • Score = your average in a category, as a percentage
  • Weight = that category's share of the class grade from the syllabus, as a percentage
  • Remaining weight = 100% minus the weights already graded
  • Target = the class grade you want, as a percentage

Example

  1. Homework 92% (weight 20%), quizzes 85% (15%), midterm 78% (25%) and a project 88% (10%). The 30% final hasn't happened yet.
  2. Weighted points: 92 × 20 = 1,840, 85 × 15 = 1,275, 78 × 25 = 1,950 and 88 × 10 = 880, for a total of 5,945.
  3. The weights entered add up to 70%, so the current grade is 5,945 ÷ 70 = 84.93%, a B on the plus/minus scale.
  4. You've banked 5,945 ÷ 100 = 59.45 of the 70 points available so far. To finish with 85%, you need (85 − 59.45) ÷ 0.30 = 85.17% on the final.
  5. A 90% (an A-) is out of reach: even 100% on the final gives 59.45 + 30 = 89.45%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade if the weights don't add up to 100%?

Divide the sum of score × weight by the sum of the weights you actually used. With 70% of the class graded and 5,945 weighted points, your grade is 5,945 ÷ 70 = 84.93%. This is how most online gradebooks show a grade mid-term.

What is a 90% as a letter grade?

On the standard 10-point scale, 90% is an A. On a plus/minus scale it's usually an A-, with 93% and up an A. Schools and teachers set their own cutoffs, so check the syllabus.

Is my grade the average of all my assignments?

Only if every assignment counts the same. In a weighted class, each category counts by its weight, so a simple average of every score can be several points off.

What do I need on the rest of the class to get an A?

Subtract the points you've banked from your target and divide by the remaining weight. If you've banked 59.45 points with 30% left, an 85% needs (85 − 59.45) ÷ 0.30 = 85.17% on the rest. The calculator does this automatically when your weights add up to less than 100%.

Does extra credit count?

Enter category scores above 100% if extra credit pushed them there. If extra credit is a separate bonus added to the final grade, add it to the result yourself.
